Typing "/name testplayer" in the console will give you the name "testplayer". If you want to add colors to your name, you need to use the ^ character followed with a color number.
Colours: 0-black 1-red 2-green 3-yellow 4-blue 5-cyan 6-Pink 7-white (8-black 9-red)
Example: "^1test^3player" will show the name "testplayer", but the word "test" will be red and "player" will be yellow.
To get the ^ character in Windows without any hassle from special keyboard effects that some people might experience, hold down the ALT key, type 9 and then 4 on the keypad, then release the ALT key.
