The Blaster is the human team’s standard issue backup weapon, and is the only weapon that can be held at the same time as any other (barring grenades, which are really a sort of upgrade). You will hold on to the blaster for the entirety of your short, short life.
Blasters are, as one might expect, the weakest weapon on offer, with a spectacularly low damage per shot and a projectile that moves slowly enough that it can quite easily be dodged at medium to long range. However, the inexhaustible ammunition frequently comes in handy, especially when one is carrying a short-range weapon such as a Pain Saw or even a Shotgun. In particular, you can often find that with a short-range weapon you can do severe damage to your opponent, only to have them run away - a quick toggle to the blaster will then allow you to finish them off. Similarly, if you are carrying a weapon that is either precious in ammo or only effective at short range, you come across, say, an Acid Tube, and have some reason to believe time is on your side, you may wish to consider spending ten seconds or so killing it in a comparatively inexpensive fashion.
The most common use for blasters, however, is as a last-ditch resort when you have been foolish enough to exhaust your primary weapon, or to engage in combat armed with a Construction Kit. The advice here is: panic.
A bind of itemtoggle blaster will switch between your blaster and your primary weapon, which comes in handy.
